Wetlands Meadow

We are so fortunate to live on the edge of wetlands. This meadow is between us and the river. It  abounds with grasses and shrubs and wildlife of all kinds. The colors here are much quieter than my usual work. Don’t worry, I’ll make up for that tomorrow. <grin> I didn’t make this artwork into [...]

Mood Indigo

Autumn’s here, and the Oregon mornings are foggy again. I think I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: Douglas-firs and fog seem to be made for each other. I adapted this artwork from a photo I took along the Willamette River near my home. Enjoy! xox PS As always, prints are available on my [...]

Inside Passage

This artwork is a based on a photo captured in Alaska’s Inside Passage. Cruising north from Ketchikan to Tracy Arm Fjord, the scenery is magnificent. The dominant color is blue, sky and water, which is emphasized here with an overall blue tone. Enjoy! xox PS Prints are available at my print site.

Desolate Beauty

Is it a butte, a bluff, a cliff, an uprising, an outcropping? Is it badlands or simply stark, desolate, barren land? Was is formed by water erosion eons ago, by wind erosion more recently, by glaciers in the last ice age? Are there dinosaurs here? I don’t know, and I want to know. As much [...]

Ready to Go

A BNSF freight train waits beside grain silos in the rail yard at Havre, Montana. (Pronounced “Hav-er.”) I shot the original photo from my train window while we were stopped in Havre. At first I thought that my wide angle lens caused the tracks to curve like that, but peeking at the train yard on [...]

Double Ditch Indian Village

My niece and I drove north of Bismarck one day, ending up at the Double Ditch Indian Village, a former Mandan village on the Missouri River. The Indians occupied the village from about 1490 to 1785, when smallpox forced them to abandon it. Today, you can see the remains of their lodges, trash mounds, and [...]

Wall

It’s not the most elegant title in the world, but I wanted something very plain to match the simplicity of the image. This is part of the North Dakota Heritage Center in Bismarck, modified by the Topaz Simplify filter. Enjoy! xox

Grain Elevator

To me, this is one of the iconic sights of the great plains, a grain elevator towering above everything else in view. There were lots of them along the BNSF (Burlington Northern and Santa Fe) Railway tracks used by Amtrak’s Empire Builder. This one is somewhere around Wolf Point, Montana. I’m assuming it holds wheat [...]

Early Spring on the High Plains

Continuing our journey on Amtrak’s Empire Builder, we came down out of the Rocky Mountains to the high plains of Montana, part of the American Great Plains. The scene was mostly rolling hills with short, brown grass and patches of snow. Strong winds whipped the grass towards the east. The train had to slow down [...]

Trees in the Mist

Here’s another shot from my trip through the Rockies a few days ago. This was taken somewhere in Western Montana about five minutes after the photo of the Empire Builder. I have no idea what kind of trees these are, other than conifers. If anyone can recognize them by shape alone, I’d love to know. [...]
